My Rock Steps are done!!
After seven years of mixing cement, hauling stone and fitting rocks, my stone steps are finally done! I have a very patient wife -- she has been staring at (and mowing around) a pile of rocks for a LONG time.
A long time ago, I got a wild hair to build a set of steps down to our beach at our lake home. My in-laws in North Dakota lived near a farmer who had an old split rock two-story home on his property. The home was built entirely from split field stone! Amazing. Unfortunately, the home was crumbling and it's wooden roof was completely shot.
We inquired with the farmer to see if might scavenge a few of the stones split on two planes and he was agreeable. Over the next two summers we hauled rocks about 200 miles to our lake home.
This weekend my wife and I and boys completed the project. We are tickled with how they turned out. The only thing that is left is a good acid-scrub to get the remaining cement residue off of the stones.
